LƯỢT XEM

hey guys

so i have a thing for old hardware and so my lan pc currently runs a gtx 480 watercooled with a q6600 2.9ghz.
id like to use the 2nd identical 480 ive got (same aquagrafx480 block) and run them together because why the hell not i like the look of it. now i have the opportunity to get an Asus striker 2 ROG board for cheap and i really want it so i'm thinking of pairing that with some form of lga 771 xeon because current Q6600 is admittedly bottle necking 1 480 but screw the price of the high end C2Q's. this projects gonna be slooooow to finish because i have to buy a big ass power supply *fun* with my small amount of cash but for me it will be totally worth it even though i have an already much better pc (although with how much trouble its been giving me i might end up parting it out to fund this sli 480 rig xD)

so anyway i found an E5504 for $10 (AUD) $10 and i also found an x5650 for a little more so does anyone know which is the better cpu and also if someone could give a list of the best xeons for the job so i can hunt the used market for them as well that would be fantastic.

like i said before this pc is just thing i want to do i actually enjoy gaming on the single 480 q6600 pc more than i do my main far better pc idk why maybe just because its nice to see old hardware play games it said not to be able to but im rambling so yeah best lga 771 xeons give us a shout guys.
Cheers

Look for the Xeon X5470, or a Xeon E5450/X5450 (the E5450 should overclock better or at the very least run cooler)

The X5650 is LGA1366 and not compatible, while the E5504 isn't that much better than what you already have

thanks ill look around especially the e5450 if it overclocks better cause this board comes with a very nice Scythe tower cooler so ill be overclocking this to lessen/get rid of any bottlenecks.

EDIT: haha i didnt even notice the x5650 was 1366 i should have noticed that. you mentioned the x5450 and x5470 neither of which i can find for sale right now but would the in between x5460 be as good? its got a decent base clock and apparently are decent overclockers.

That should be fine. I recommended the X5450 because I have one that can safely do 4GHz (almost matching an i5 4440 so therefore exceeding Haswell i3), and the X5470 as it has a higher multiplier and doesn't take as much to overclock as the X5450 (it can be run at 4GHz on some multi socket motherboards with what's called a BSEL mod).

ah ok i see, i saw an x5460 do 4ghz when i was researching last night but ill keep an eye out for the x5450 and if i cant find one then the x5460 will be what i get. is that true about it matching an i5 4440 i thought it would still be behind with architecture and what not

It comes close. They need to be at around 4.4 - 4.6GHz to match one. And the i5 4440 runs at 3.1Ghz across all 4 cores, 3.3GHz single threaded.

Ah ok i see, im not a big overclocker but i will push this xeon as far as i can. i don't think ill really have any problems with bottleneck since 480 sli is equal to a 770 and the x5460 doesn't bottleneck one of them so it should be good. This pc is going to end up being close to my main pc with an i5 2400 and gtx 780 haha

Lol, yep. There's still life left in LGA775.

yes there certainly is, i hate how people say that the high end lga 775 stuff is useless just because its old but really i mean you can still get a certainly playable fps in games and tbh my current 775 seems to be more responsive and reliable than my main i5 pc in desktop stuff like youtube etc its really quite weird.

Considering a 2007 Xeon X5450 clocked 1GHz lower than an FX 8320 still is faster single threaded...people really underestimate the platform. As it is, when I loaded my LGA775 rig to my friend for a while, then ended up giving him my i5 4440 rig, the only noticeable difference was the gaming performance (helped a lot by running dual channel 8GB DDR3 1333 instead of 7GB asymetric dual channel DDR2 800).

The younger AMD chips weren't great in single threaded peformance so yeah an older lga 775/771 chip could beat them easily in applications that didnt use more than 4 cores.
Your one hell of a generous guy ay? haha. The ddr2 is really the only limiting factor but oh well i guess

Even if you get DDR2 1066 with the timings at 7-7-7-20, it in theory at least has the same bandwidth+latency as DDR3 1333 9-9-9-24 when run at 1066 (I haven't tested that yet) due the timings actually being the same.

For you however that should be a non issue, if this is the Striker II your talking about: https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/Striker_II_Extreme/ because it runs DDR3 and apparently supports up to "dual channel DDR3 2000", which means that when paired with standard DDR2 1600 sticks the Xeon will be limited a lot less than mine (LGA775+DDR2=PITA memory compatibility).

And I don't have much to do while I work up the courage to test my old Baby AT SS7 board now that its been repaired, so I might as well help out..

haha wow thats quite technical xD.

nah unfortunately its not an extreme its an Asus Striker 2 Formula ROG so only 8gb ddr2 800 but at least it supports 8gb ram unlike alot of 775 boards and besides my 8gb ddr2 use to run all games fine.

Yeah, 8GB of DDR2 is plenty. And since its based around the Nvidia chipset, it more than likely can actually run 4x2GB DDR2 1066 unlike my Asus P5Q Deluxe (which requires odd stick orders to run 4GB of DDR2 1066, let alone 8GB).
